New World has had to halt its servers at least

New World set sail on its maiden voyage into the realm of paid expansions with "Rise of the Angry Earth" just yesterday. The introduction of fresh content, particularly the eagerly anticipated addition of mounts, has breathed new life into Amazon's MMO, resulting in a resurgence of player interest, longer queues, and a substantial rise in player counts.

When New World originally made waves with its launch two years ago, it achieved staggering player numbers, exceeding 900,000 concurrent players within the first month. However, in the interim period, the player counts had simmered down to more modest levels.

Yet, with the launch of "Rise of the Angry Earth," concurrent player counts have experienced a dramatic upswing, doubling from September's peak player count. As of the present moment, it has reached an impressive 54,498 concurrent players, according to SteamDB. Although this figure doesn't quite reach the peaks of October and November 2022, coinciding with the free "Brimstone Sands" update, it's a noteworthy feat, considering that the expansion comes at a price tag of $30.

To accommodate the surge in player numbers, Amazon has been compelled to deploy additional servers across various regions, with a particular focus on the EU region, where queues were notably high throughout the day. Several new servers have been commissioned in the EU region, and the US and South American regions have also seen an infusion of fresh servers to address queue-related issues. On a personal note, my experience on the El Dorado server in US West didn't appear overly problematic during the times I logged in yesterday, but it's possible I simply got lucky.

In a somewhat amusing twist, as noted by a Reddit user, the queues themselves have become a recurring theme, with players queuing to access the server and then queuing once more to complete in-game objectives within the server.

Of course, no expansion launch would be complete without its share of challenges. New World has had to halt its servers at least once to address intermittent connection problems. As of this morning, the Amazon team has temporarily disabled Premium Season Pass purchases due to a related issue. The official New World Discord has been inundated with reports from users detailing various issues, ranging from main quest progress being entirely reset (with some players now unable to advance it) for those who hadn't completed the original Main Story Quest, to a bug affecting Weapon XP tokens when used with the Flail.
