How can I improve my skills as a fighter in Dark and Darker

I'm eager to enhance my gameplay, but it seems like I'm constantly getting outperformed by others. How can players of different classes improve their combat against me? When should I engage bards and clerics? How can I avoid being picked off by archers, prevent barbarians from one-shotting me, and survive the warlock's damage-over-time abilities? My friends often mention "footwork," but I'm not entirely clear on its meaning.

I'm aware that certain weapons deal reduced damage because I'm a fighter. I want to use the heaviest armor and all available weapons, but there are some aspects I struggle with and need assistance:

1, Heavy Armor: Rogues seem to effortlessly evade me. How can I prevent this and close the gap?

2, Long Swords and Spears: Is the right-click a block? Should I exclusively use a longsword or carry a sword and shield for close encounters?

3, Zweihander: I'm baffled by its mechanics. How can I avoid clanging on every swing? What's the deal with the right-click? Do I have to commit to two swings, or is there a way to stop it without clanging?

4, Sword and Shield: How do the other shields work? Despite trying to block attacks by observing their direction, I still get hit often. Even when I successfully block, foes seem to strike faster.

5, Halberds and Bardiche: I haven't explored these weapons yet.

6, Bows: Is it worthwhile to bring them as a fighter? I like having a ranged option, but my friend claims bows are useless for fighters. Is this accurate?

7, Crossbows: The heavy crossbow takes a while to load. Is it primarily for initiating fights? I struggle with the light crossbows; they feel less effective than bows.

8, Off-Hand Weapons: I'm unsure about their use, mechanics, and advantages without taking damage.

9, Two-Handed Axes and Mauls: I appreciate their speed, especially against AI opponents, but against players, it's challenging to land hits without receiving damage.

To conclude, I want to emphasize that I'm still a novice at the game. Before jumping to conclusions about class balance and labeling fighters as weak, I'm eager to learn how to improve and have an enjoyable experience. Currently, I'm even losing a significant portion of my health to a single skeleton archer, so any guidance is appreciated.
